• Sally Titterington - visual media artist and designer •
Sally T plays and invents anything and everything including imaginary Brands: Liberty Young; Manchester Ltd®; Urbanpicnic, The Creative Bureaux©, Digital Disturbances, Ambient Stings and Elevators Air. Why? This is her response to our obsessive culture of word ownership on the internet.
'One uses a word you cannot own it or can you?' While it's possible to use these words she continues to and takes the law into her own hands by sticking ©'s and ®'s wherever she likes. 'The law of art and the art of law...'
Sally T and composer Malcolm Fisher established Oneword, in 1996, and set up temporary art gallery spaces in fashion savvy, Milan. Creating ambient salons using unique soundtracks, soundscapes and visual images, within a C21st French styled Salon. These international cultural exchange parties showcased many other artsits' work and the established galleries started coming to Oneword Salons to source new talent. 'We liked the idea of independence and not having to have a person or body to allow or not permit us to show our work, so we just made our own galleries'.
Today, Sally T works from her studio base in Manchester. She loves it in the cotton mill and recalls the time when Manchester was described as 'The Workshop of the World'. It still is for her as she scrambles experience, memory and dreams into analogue and digital communications be it a line drawing, a garment, a painting, a joke, lighting design, songs, lyrics or a film.
Her work includes site specific installations and film for projection. A combination of: design; sound; soundscapes; text; poetry; word creation; still and moving images; blasts of colour and form. 'Kinetic Wallpaper' is a phrase Sally T uses to describe her unique edits, creating projections that are like wallpaper. Just as Erik Satie likened his music to 'Furniture', not to be listened to like an orchestra, she calls her moving images 'Kinetic Wallpaper' as the work is to be viewed as wallpaper and not as traditional cinema film.
The pieces are contemplative, random and open to interpretation. 'Kinetic Wallpaper' is a 'space filler', empty interiors and exteriors, urban and natural spaces ready to be filled with bespoke images, light, sound and textural graphics.
